It’s well known that in many years (not this one, fortunately) the pop field is overrun by radio hits and songs that slide in on success as opposed to quality, leaving artists making actually decent pop music empty handed. Any thoughts on the addition of a “Best Pop Song” category at the Grammys? Of course it would follow guidelines comparable to Song of the Year, Best Rap Song, etc.

I’d like to correct myself on the quality of this year’s nominations. WINNERS were of more quality than usual, but nominees were just as embarrassing as normal.

Yes ,if we have song and performance for rap rock R&B and country why not pop? I´ve always thought there should be one.Of course this would be nice if POP songs get nominated not EDM and rap songs that wouldn´t succeed on their own genre.

This should totally be a category! If country/rap/rock/r&b song loses soty it can win a genre song while if Pop Song doesn’t win in GF it has no chance of winning a songwriting award. This year Best Pop Song would definitely went to Shallow

I agree, likely with nominations for In My Blood, Make Me Feel, No Tears Left to Cry, and Delicate. I think pop often gets trivialized for being overly generic and unartistic while there are truly some great pop songs out there that deserve an award/nomination like this one.

Why does it matter. The voters don’t make any distinction anyway. Just look at this year’s winner in SoTY. And last year’s nominees in the category (all of them sucked).

You would think that songs like Take Me Church, A Team, 7 years and I Took A Pill In Ibiza would win the songwriting categories, but they wouldn’t.

They should just consolidate the performance and song awards in all genre categories into one award that goes to the artist, producer, engineers/mixers, and songwriters if it’s a new song.

Usually there are a couple songs that differentiate, and I personally feel like that makes it worth it. Actually decent songwriting in pop music should be rewarded, in my opinion.

This! Most of the voters don’t even take into consideration the songwriting of a song when voting for the Song categories! Also I’m all for limiting the number of Grammys given out, because as of now there are way too much!

If they do that, they might as well increase the number of nominees to 6 or 7, like the Emmys.

The Gospel/Christian categories already do this so I wouldn’t be opposed to this

If Best Pop Song would exist, it would be like that:

    2010: Halo

    2011: Bad Romance

    2012: Rolling In The Deep

2013: Somebody That I Used To Know

    2014: Royals

    2015: Stay With Me

    2016: Uptown Funk

    2017: Hello

    2018: Shape Of You

    2019: Shallow

That’s a good idea. It made sense at the beginning because most artists didn’t’ write their own songs in those days. Today, almost everyone writes their own material or finds a way to get their name on their own material.

If they are not going to do that, then yes it is only fair to have a pop song category to be consistent with the other main genres.

They need a nominations review committee for the Pop Field first. Then, they could think about that. Personally, I’m against it because most of SOTY winners are Pop songs. It’s unnecessary.
